Every year, thousands flock to the breathtaking Gran Canaria from every corner of Europe and beyond for the wonderfully loud, proud, and colorful Winter Pride Maspalomas. This year, from November 4 to 10, the week-long celebration of diversity is back in action, with a full lineup of activities that are not only about partying but also about solidarity, awareness, and community building. Island vacationers, whether a member of the LGBTQ+ community, supporters of the Rainbow Community, or just at the right place at the right time, have their pick of incredible concerts, parties, parades, and live shows where everyone can be themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination.

Brief History of Winter Pride Maspalomas

The Winter Pride Maspalomas started as a much, much smaller festivity many years ago. Today, this sparkly fun celebration draws up to 100,000 attendees, becoming one of Europe’s biggest LGBTQ+ events. It has also expanded to include deeply meaningful activities, such as workshops, discussions, and exhibitions, exploring aspects and issues facing the LGBTQ+ community.

The Must-Not Miss Activities

While most of Europe freezes with the cold early November breeze, the Winter Pride Maspalomas, along with the warm Gran Canaria sun, is heating it up with all things fabulous. You can guarantee a jam-packed schedule of parties (by the beach, by or in the pool, or even aboard a boat. Name it!), concerts, and other forms of exciting live entertainment waiting for everyone. Need a list? Here’s a closer look at what you shouldn’t miss from the Winter Pride Maspalomas 2024:

Yumbo Main Stage Party and Nightlife

Your Canarian Rainbow Community experience is incomplete without at least a couple of hours spent at the beating heart of Winter Pride Maspalomas–the Yumbo Center! Head to the main stage area for the ultimate party experience, with top international acts and DJs coming to give the sea of partygoers the (sweatiest) time of their lives.

In addition, the Yumbo main stage is surrounded by various lively gay bars, clubs, and restaurants, each offering something special every night to draw revelers in. We recommend the cozy Mykonos Bar and Ricky’s Cabaret Bar for drag shows and great cocktails.

If you don’t mind paying extra to have an excellent view of the stage and rub elbows with the performers, consider booking a Premium VIP Private Skybox for access to the VIP Lounge Main Stage. It comes with a meet-and-greet with the talented acts before or after gracing the stage, a champagne bar, and a lovely selection of complimentary gourmet bites, among many other things.

Also check out our selection of Gran Canaria’s best gay accommodations because every rainbow reveler deserves a good rest after a wild night out.

The Pride Walk

The Pride Walk, also known as the Pride Parade, happens on the Saturday of Pride week. Participants can join the sea of people on the walk or be on one of the float trucks. Either way, donning your most fabulously vibrant outfit (the more glittery, the better) is the only acceptable way to lose yourself in the electrifying colors and sounds that will fill the streets.

Not just about partying and getting together with like-minded people, the Pride Walk is the the LGBTQ+ community’s call to the world to embrace diversity and inclusivity at the same time. How long does it last? It’s a three-hour extravaganza along Avenida de Tirajana, with an expected attendance of up to 20,000 pride enthusiasts, including locals, tourists, and supporters.

Pool Parties

One of the strictest rules when flying to Gran Canaria to join the Winter Pride Maspalomas is that you party your heart out, and one of the many places you can best do this is at pool parties. This year, just as the years before it (not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic), promises to bring you the hottest parties in the archipelago that will keep you grooving and drinking until the early morning hours. You’ll have plenty of hotels to choose from, many with themes and unique offerings to make partying more interesting.

Boat Parties

What’s Winter Pride Maspalomas without taking it in the water? You’re in one of the most paradisiacal places on Earth, after all, so why stay dry inland when you can join gay boat/cruise parties? Just imagine — breathtaking ocean views, warm weather, the sun slightly toasting your skin, lively music, and a fun, inclusive atmosphere. Plus, expect an overflowing supply of refreshing drinks and opportunities to socialize. Some even come with themed events. Isn’t that just the perfect way to celebrate? To join one, simply look for recommended providers from the official Winter Pride website, your chosen accommodation, or search online for highly rated boat party options. Also make sure to buy the tickets in advance because they can be hard to book close to pride week.

How to Get to Maspalomas

Traffic can be heavy in Maspalomas during peak tourist seasons, so plan your transportation in advance and consider the time of day.

By Bus

Maspalomas is well connected to the airport and other tourist destinations in Gran Canaria via public transportation, making it easy for tourists arriving to partake in the Winter Pride to reach the famous resort town.

These are the bus routes headed or passing Maspalomas from the airport:

  • Bus 66 (Airport – Faro de Maspalomas) is the fastest bus route, only taking around 40 minutes to reach Maspalomas.
  • Bus 90 (Telde – Faro de Maspalomas) takes around 50 minutes to reach Maspalomas.
  • Bus 36 (Telde – Faro de Maspalomas) takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes to reach Maspalomas.
  • Bus 1 (Las Palmas – Puerto de Mogan) takes around an hour and a half to reach Maspalomas and stops in several towns along the way.

By Car

Do you prefer to rent a car? That’s an excellent choice! It’ll allow you to travel at your own pace anytime you like. Plus, driving is a convenient way to get to Maspalomas and other destinations in Gran Canaria, as the island boasts a well-developed road network and the highways are generally well-maintained. Simply put the information (address, place name, or coordinates) on the GPS navigation system, and you’re good to go.

Maspalomas is just along the GC-1 motorway, the main highway that runs along Gran Canaria’s lovely southern coast. If traveling to Maspalomas from the airport or other major towns on the island, such as Las Palmas, Puerto Rico, and Puerto de Mogan, you would typically take the GC-1 highway and exit 46. However, it could differ depending on your starting point and your specific route.

By Taxi

Taxis are readily available throughout Gran Canaria, so you can easily arrange a ride to Maspalomas from other major towns on the island. The bright green light on top of the vehicle is on if it’s available to take passengers. As expected, it can be more expensive than other modes of transportation, but you can always ask for an estimate of the fare beforehand.

Note, by the way, taxi rides in Gran Canaria are metered, and tariffs may increase depending on the time of day and week. The base fare is €2.50, adding €0.67 per kilometer. You can also make the taxi wait at a rate of €15.00 per hour.

Tips for the Ultimate Winter Pride Fun

Attending Winter Pride Maspalomas can be more enjoyable and unforgettable by keeping these tips in mind:

Dress right

Check the dress code before heading out, especially if you plan to visit a club or lounge. As mentioned, a lot of the places and activities during the Winter Pride have themes.

Cash is king

Most clubs, bars, and restaurants accept credit cards. Still, we recommend bringing enough cash with you, especially for small transactions.

Stay aware of your surroundings

The entire Canary Islands is generally very safe, but nothing beats staying vigilant and aware of your surroundings. The Winter Pride is a busy season, so it can get crowded in some popular areas. Just keep your belongings close and be mindful of pickpockets, and you should be okay.

Stay hydrated

With all the bustle and socializing, it’s easy to forget about hydration, but you must keep your water intake high with all the heat and dancing you’ll be doing.

Protect yourself from the sun

The Gran Canaria sun can be intense even in November, so wear sunscreen and a hat (one that matches your fab outfit, of course), and hang out under a shade when possible.

Practice safe sex

Maspalomas is a steaming hot place with plenty of attractive tourists and locals. Thankfully, you don’t need to go on a condom run to stay safe, as trusty rubbers are readily available at many venues throughout the resort town.

Pace yourself

You’re only in Maspalomas for a few days, so why not make the most of your stay? Well, yes, but don’t get too caught up in the excitement of the festivity and forget to listen to your body. Pace yourself and take breaks as needed so you can enjoy yourself without harming your precious health.

Look out for each other

Whether you’re attending Winter Pride with friends or just by sexy self, always look out for each other and lend a helping hand if you see someone struggling or needing assistance.

Know when to get help

Don’t be shy or scared to seek help. Medical tents are spread throughout the area for the event to make sure everyone’s okay. You can also dial 112 to reach emergency services.

Think about how you’ll get back to your accommodation

If you plan to stay out late far from your accommodation, make sure to have a safe and reliable way to get back to your hotel. You can walk, but consider booking a taxi or using a ride-sharing app.
