Playa de Santiago is known for its pleasant temperatures and abundant sunshine throughout the year. The town’s history is intertwined with the growth of the agricultural and fishing industries on the island. In the early 20th century, the Norwegian company Fred Olsen and the Tinerfeña company Rodriguez Lopez settled in the area. Both are engaged in the agricultural export sector, butthe latter also operated a fish cannery called Santa Rosalía, the only one in Playa de Santiago and one of three on the entire island. In addition, the two companies built a series of dams and reservoirs, allowing agriculture production to prosper.

The 1970s marked a downturn for the companies. This decline was compounded by the death of Don Alvaro, leading to the closure of the factories and widespread unemployment in the municipality. Many residents opted to emigrate to Cuba in search of work. Eventually, the Rosalía factory was demolished and replaced with an apartment block, with only the old Indian laurel tree remaining in the small square as a testament to the area’s history. Fortunately, the recent growth of tourism has brought new opportunities to the region.

Picturesque beaches

Playa de Santiago is a picturesque beach at the foot of a rocky plateau. It begins at the harbor bay and stretches along the promenade up to the Club Laurel, a casual but elegant restaurant. The beach is approximately 500 meters long and is protected from the surf by a pier, making it a safe place to swim. In addition, it has been awarded a blue flag for its high water quality and is one of the most important beaches on the island.

Visitors to Playa de Santiago can relax on the sun-warmed pebble-strewn shore or take a dip in the cold Atlantic surf. The beach also boasts a small section covered in fine, light-colored sand. This area is perfect for those looking to sink their toes into the soft grains and lounge in the sun. More adventurous travelers can go diving to explore the caves and marine life of the area or rent jet skis, boats, and other water sports equipment for some fun on the water. After a swim in the ocean or a day of basking in the sun’s rays, vacationers can rinse off in the showers right on the beach.

Another great option while in the area is to escape to the serene shores of the nearby beaches of Playa de Tapahuga, Playa del Medio, and Playa de Chinguarime. Located just a short distance from Playa Santiago, these hidden coves are the perfect retreat for those seeking peace and quiet.
