History

Pico de las Nieves, which translates to ”Peak of the Snows,” is commonly believed to have earned its name due to its proximity to three snow wells, or neveras, built in the early 17th century. Laborers would use these pits as storage for the collected snow, which they would then transport to Santa Ana via donkeys, arriving in wooden boxes to cool the upper class’s beverages of the upper class, as well as relieve their fevers and bruises.

The viewpoint or mirador is just a little below the top of Pico de las Nieves and is beside a small restricted military zone. It also offers incredible views of the emblematic Roque Nublo, Roque Bastón, more of central Gran Canaria’s rugged landscape, and even Tenerife’s Mount Teide on a clear day.

Traveler Tips

  • The viewpoints around the island can get crowded, especially during the busy months, so arrive early to avoid the throngs of tourists and get the best views. Also avoid weekends if you prefer a quieter experience.
  • Bring a jacket or sweater to keep you comfortably warm, as it can get a bit chilly around the Pico de las Nieves area—yes, even in summer.
  • Oh, the weather can be so capricious! Clouds can roll in quickly, which can affect visibility.
  • Wear sturdy footwear if you plan to hike, as the trails can be rocky, and some have slippery, fine pebbles.
  • If you’re hiking or cycling, make sure to carry water and snacks, as facilities are quite limited in the area.
  • To maximize the experience, bring a camera or binoculars. Besides the glorious landscape, the area is home to several species. The birds, in particular, are especially lovely to watch.
  • Plan your visit on a clear day by checking on updated weather forecasts.
  • Use sunscreen and a wide-brim hat, as the sun can be intense despite the cool breeze.
